Licence terms

Greggle licence.

Written to be read. A school’s business manager should get through it in three minutes and not feel they need to forward it to anyone.

Paid licences are not on sale yet. These are the terms they will be sold under, published early so a school can read them before asking for a quote. Until then everything in Greggle is free, and section 1 is the whole of the deal.

Greggle is made by Stuart Muir, Wellington, New Zealand. These terms are between you and me. There is no company, no sales team and no support desk. You can email me and I will answer.

1. The free version

The free version of Greggle is free for anyone, for any purpose, including commercial and classroom use. No account, no time limit, no feature that stops working.

You do not need a licence to use it, and I will not start requiring one for anything that is free today.

3. How the licence works, and what it cannot do

Your licence is a small signed file. Greggle checks the signature on your own device. It does not contact me, or anyone, to do it.

This means I cannot switch your licence off, and I cannot tell whether you are using it. That is deliberate and it is not going to change. There is no remote deactivation, no usage reporting and no audit right in these terms, because the software has no way to support any of them.

The name on your licence appears in the app and on anything you print or export. That is the only enforcement mechanism there is.

4. What you agree not to do

  • Share your licence key outside the organisation or person it names.
  • Resell, sublicense or rent your licence.
  • Remove, hide or alter the licence holder name shown in the app or on exports.
  • Publish the classroom material publicly, or sell it, or pass it to another school.

You may freely: use it on any number of devices within your licence, print and photocopy the classroom material for your own students, adapt lessons for your own classes, and keep everything you have made if your licence ends.

5. Your work is yours, and I never have it

Everything you or your students create in Greggle stays on the device it was created on and in files you save yourself. I do not receive it, store it, back it up or process it.

I am not a data processor for you and there is nothing to put a data processing agreement around. If your privacy officer needs this in writing, that sentence is it.

I collect no personal information about students or staff through the app: no name, no email, no login, no device identifier, no analytics. If you buy a licence I will hold your name, your school’s name and your email address, because I have to send you an invoice and a key. That is all, and I will not use it for anything else or give it to anyone.

6. My undertaking about outbound connections

For as long as Greggle is sold under these terms, the app will not make outbound network connections other than fetching its own files when you load it. No telemetry, no analytics, no licence checks, no crash reporting, no third-party scripts or fonts.

This is enforced in the software by a Content-Security-Policy and by an automated test that fails the build if the policy is weakened, and I am stating it here as a term of the licence rather than a marketing claim.

If I ever intend to change this, I will say so publicly before any release that does it, and any school with a current licence may cancel and have the unused part of their fee refunded.

An optional AI feature is planned. If it ships it will be off by default, will require you to supply your own API key, and turning it on will be an explicit choice that names the service being contacted. Leaving it off means the paragraph above continues to hold in full.

7. When a licence ends

The classroom material is no longer yours to copy. Everything free keeps working, every board stays readable and editable, and every file you have saved stays yours. Nothing is deleted, held hostage or made unopenable.

8. If something is wrong with it

Tell me and I will fix it or refund you. Within 30 days of buying, if it is not useful to you, I will refund you in full and you do not need a reason.

Beyond that: Greggle is provided as it is. I do not promise it is free of faults or fit for a particular purpose, and to the extent the law allows, my total liability to you for anything arising out of this licence is limited to what you paid me in the previous 12 months.

If you are buying as a consumer in New Zealand, the Consumer Guarantees Act gives you rights that these terms cannot take away, and nothing here tries to. Schools and other organisations buying for business purposes agree that the Act does not apply.

9. Changes, transfers and the rest

I may change these terms for new licences. Your licence runs on the terms you bought under until it is renewed.

A school licence can move with the school if it merges or is renamed: email me and I will issue a new key. A teacher licence stays with the person, not the employer, so it moves with you if you change schools.

These terms are governed by New Zealand law and the New Zealand courts.
